Trauma & Abuse Counselling
Trauma isn’t only about what happened.
It’s about the lasting impact those experiences continue to have on how you see yourself, your relationships and the world around you.
Sometimes people know exactly what they’ve experienced. Other times they simply carry a sense that something has never felt quite right. They may struggle to trust, find themselves constantly on edge, avoid situations that feel overwhelming or live with a persistent feeling that they have to keep themselves safe.
If this feels familiar, you’re not alone.
You Don’t Need To Tell Me Everything Straight Away
One of the questions I’m sometimes asked is:
“Will I have to talk about everything that’s happened?”
The simple answer is no.
There is no expectation that you should share experiences before you feel ready.
Trust develops over time, and I believe it is something I earn rather than something you owe me.
Our work begins wherever you feel able to begin.
For some people that’s talking about the past.
For others it’s talking about what life feels like today.
Both are equally valid starting points.
Making Sense Of Your Experience
Trauma often changes the way we understand ourselves.
You may have learned to stay constantly alert.
You may find it difficult to relax, accept kindness from others or believe that your needs matter.
You may have spent years adapting to survive.
Those adaptations often made sense at the time.
Together we’ll gently explore how those experiences have shaped you, while recognising that surviving difficult circumstances is very different from being defined by them.
Therapy At Your Pace
There isn’t a right speed for healing.
Some sessions may feel emotionally demanding.
Others may feel surprisingly ordinary.
Sometimes progress is obvious.
Sometimes it’s only recognised when you look back and realise something has quietly changed.
My role isn’t to rush that process.
It’s to provide a consistent, thoughtful and respectful relationship where you can begin exploring your experiences without feeling judged or pressured.
Moving Forwards
The past cannot be changed.
Our relationship with it can.
Over time many people find they begin trusting themselves more, understanding their experiences differently and feeling freer to make choices that reflect who they are today rather than what happened to them yesterday.
If you’ve spent a long time carrying these experiences on your own, you don’t have to decide everything today. Sometimes the first step is simply allowing yourself to wonder whether things could feel different.
