Anxiety & Depression Counselling
Anxiety and depression are often spoken about as though they’re conditions that simply appear, but my experience has been that they’re usually part of a much bigger story.
Sometimes people come to therapy after a particular event has turned their life upside down. Other times there isn’t a single moment they can point to. They simply know that they’ve been surviving for a long time, and they’re exhausted.
You might find yourself constantly overthinking, expecting the worst or feeling unable to relax.
You may have lost confidence in yourself, feel disconnected from the people around you or no longer recognise the person you’ve become.
Whatever your experience, it deserves to be understood rather than judged.
Looking Beyond The Symptoms
Anxiety and depression can affect every part of life, but I don’t believe they tell us who you are.
Instead, I see them as experiences that often have something important to say.
Sometimes anxiety develops because you’ve spent years staying alert to protect yourself.
Sometimes depression follows years of carrying more than anyone should have to carry alone.
Sometimes they exist together, making it difficult to know where one ends and the other begins.
Rather than trying to fit your experience into a diagnosis, we’ll work together to understand what your anxiety or depression means in the context of your life.
Understanding Before Change
Many people begin therapy hoping to get rid of difficult thoughts or emotions as quickly as possible.
That’s understandable.
But I’ve found that lasting change often begins somewhere else.
When we start making sense of your experiences, recognising the patterns you’ve developed and understanding why they made sense at the time, something often begins to shift.
You may notice yourself becoming less critical of yourself.
You may begin recognising what you need rather than what you think you should be doing.
Over time, many people find they feel more able to make choices that reflect who they are, rather than choices driven by fear, guilt or expectation.
Working Together
Our work won’t be about me giving you the answers.
It will be about creating enough space, safety and understanding for you to discover your own.
Some sessions may feel challenging.
Others may bring relief, clarity or unexpected moments of humour.
We’ll work together at a pace that feels manageable, always recognising that meaningful change takes time.
Taking The First Step
If anxiety or depression has brought you here, you don’t need to decide today what the future looks like.
You only need to decide whether you’d like to begin a conversation.
If my approach feels like it resonates with you, I’d be happy to hear from you.
